One World Romania at School no 136

17 March / 16:00 / School nr. 136

One of the special screenings of the One World Romania Festival 2011 will be held in School no. 136, which is situated in a neighborhood at the outskirts of Bucharest. Mai Iskander's "Garbage Dreams" will be screened for a group of pupils aged 14 to 15.

The screening is organized in collaboration with the Policy Center for Roma and Minorities Association and will take place in the school club, where the previously mentioned association activates.

"Garbage Dreams" follows three teenage boys growing up on the outskirts of Cairo. The village is the home of 60000 "Zaballeen", Arabic for "garbage people". Far ahead of any modern "Green" initiatives, the Zaballeen survive by recycling 80 percent of the garbage they collect. When the community is suddenly faced with the globalization of its trade, each of the teenage boys is forced to make choices that will impact his future. The movie has a great topic that talks on several themes in a subtle way: globalization, ecology, minorities, etc.
