A Sub-Cult-Ura production with StarCrest Media GmbH and:

Florin Iepan launched in 2009 his personal campaign for the “denazification” of Romania. Based on the darkest moment in the recent history of his country, the massacre from October 1941 when Romanian soldiers, without any German assistance, burned alive more than 22.000 civilians - mostly Jews - in the occupied town of Odessa, Iepan starts the first public debate about the fascist past of Romania. This proves to be a real challenge for an E.U. and N.A.T.O. member country that carefully concealed its crimes against Jews and Roma people during WWII, and where Marshal Antonescu, the head of the government at that time is considered even today, by the majority of Romanians, a great patriot and anticommunist leader.

“Odessa” will be an investigation documentary which follows, with a certain amount of self-irony, the painful and convoluted process through which Iepan discovers the web of complicities and the initial mechanisms which eventually led to the ethnic cleansing carried out by Romanians during the war and inquires to what extent those prejudices and mechanisms of thought can still be found in today’s Romania.
