In the former German Democratic Republic there were about 72,000 convicted people for trying to flee the country. In Stefan Weinert’s documentary, 5 people explain the reasons why they couldn’t remain there any longer, why they dreamt of living in freedom and describe the demeaning and suffocating treatment that Stasi (the Secret Services of GDR) would apply in those kind of situations.
Even if the testimonies of the 5 people are different by biographical content, their memories draw an authentic portrait of an oppressive political and social past, through the fear, the humiliation and the isolation they had to suffer.
